Winter Cardinals
- Goldenrod
Ranging across the eastern half of the U.S., the cardinal is popular for its bright color and song, and has been chosen the State bird of seven States. Being non-migratory, cardinals live year round in thickets, field borders, wood edges, parks and suburban gardens. They feed on a wide range of seeds, insects and other arthropods. Bird feeders stocked with sunflower seeds are a cardinal's favorite, especially in the winter when other food sources are limited. Winter Cardinals on Goldenrod catches a pair resting on dried goldenrod near a forest edge just as an early snowstorm passes. The goldenrod has yet to drop the seeds produced during the previous growing season.
